Welcome, wanderer...
However you found me, I'm glad you're here.
The Nerdy Book Club is a slow-paced intellectual community for commentary and discussion on books like:
Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny by Kate Manne
Queer Phenomenology by Sara Ahmed
Tomorrow Sex Will Be Good Again by Katherine Angel
Pleasure Activism by adrienne maree brown
I'm an academic with expertise in English-language drama, literature, and feminist theory, so that's where my emphasis will be. But we might have guest writers who bring other perspectives to the table, too.
As my favourite social media theorist Louisa Munch says, 'We can't have a democracy without informed citizens, and it's an emergency'. This is my small, slow contribution to that work - because this stuff takes time to digest, but the more we practise, the easier it gets.
Here's how it works
I did say 'slow-paced', right?
Once a book gets set, I'll be aiming for a pace of one chapter per week. If you're following along with your own copy, this should feel relatively doable. Where possible, I'll point you toward free or discounted versions of the books we're covering.
But this is a no-pressure and no-homework space - if all you want or have space for is to get some exposure to this stuff secondhand, that's cool, too. And you can always modulate how much you engage over time. To be honest with you, my pace will probably ebb and flow, too.
I'll read and then share some thoughts, provocations, and reflection questions on each chapter.
If you're subscribed, that newsletter will hit your inbox as soon as it's published. And there will always be an invitation for you to engage in the discussion through comments on each post.
That's it!
Welcome - and happy reading.
